
Alan Gunn was born in January 1940. Alan went to live in Calderstones in September 1955 when he was 15 years old. He left in February 1974 and went to live in Lisieux Hall, Chorley.
John Thompson was born in April 1942. John went to live in Calderstones in November 1966 when he was 24 years old. He left in March 1971 and went to live in Lisieux Hall, Chorley.
Here John and Alan share memories of the dormitories at Calderstones.
Transcript:
You were saying last time Alan about the dormitories – were they locked or unlocked at night?
Alan: Locked at night. Then after that you have to shut the door, make sure nobody go out in the television room.’
So at night time you had to stay in the dormitory?
Alan: Yeah.
And Alan were you saying – were there fires? Do you remember there being fires on the dormitory in winter?
Alan: Yeah.
So what do you remember about that?
Alan: Well you used to get the wood and paper and matches. Light the fire. The staff never go to sleep, always staying awake.
So the fire was alight all night was it?
Alan: Fire in all night. Yeah.
… Who would make the fires?
Alan: Nightman.
John: Nightman is one what sleep in. I don’t know what a nightman name is. He was the nightman there…
Alan: One of them, nightman, he had his feet up on the chair keeping himself warm.
