The Lunacy Commision, set up by the Lunacy Act 1845, inspected the running of the Royal Albert, and similar institutions, in its early decades. Each year, after a visit, the Commissioners wrote a report.

The first six Lunacy Commission reports on the Royal Albert Asylum were from 1871 to 1876:
